Oh No! Not Our Beloved Ichigo or Zero Two!

Death flags… Death flags everywhere. Episode 7 of Darling in the FranXX started out to be the beloved beach episode every anime has. Until we realize that any successful Gainax/Trigger anime usually ends with someone dying in the middle part of the series excluding Kill la Kill.

But you can’t deny the slight resemblance between the setting of ‘Gurren Lagann’ and ‘Darling in the Franxx’ in terms of place (a vast apocalyptic wasteland), the number of episodes (24 and 27) and also being stuck in some kind of closed ecosystem (Plantations).

UPDATE: An updated episode recap/review is available for episode 20 onwards – Zero Two is Dead (?)

So why do we think that this might be a setup for one of those tear drowning series? Well, let’s find out:

Zero Two Tells Hiro to Be Together Forever

Oh no…

Do you like the smell of death? Seriously, don’t say this to anyone. Unless of course, you like a death wish. Well, as if your waifu’s real, so no problem… she won’t die, you probably will though.

Ichigo Has Yet to Confess Her Love

Cue the memes!

Poor poor Ichigo… Is this a sign? A sign that once Ichigo’s able to confess her feelings, it’s also the time she kicks the bucket? Who knows? But yeah, those shooting stars sure are pretty – now if only Hiro’s able to say the same to Ichigo.

Goro Is Slowly Realizing What Love Is

Do you remember your first time?

Ah, the sweet smell of youth. It’s at this episode we realize, that we’re really just watching adolescent kids discover what relationships are. At some point in the series, Zorome even asked ‘If they’ll become adults’.

The Introduction of Nines

The smug punk

They are supposedly the elite unit who are on the front lines. Get the Gurren Lagann feels now? Is this some kind of Anti-Spiral kind of plot? We hope so.

Nine Iota is Zero Two and this smug punk just confirmed it. This will probably mean that we’re at the half part of the show where Kamina dies and Papa and the Plantations are actually Anti-Spiral.

Kokoro Finds a Book

Remember kids, use protection

Dr. Franxx has opened up the mind of the children by undirectly showing them the past – did you think that finding an old village by themselves is a coincidence? Nope.

After exploring the ruins, Kokoro finds a pregnancy book. Will she become pregnant? Probably not. Seriously though, I don’t know what this means but I guess it must be significant? If you have any theories post a comment below.

They’re All Happy

One happy family

It’s just the 7th episode out of 24 and we all know what comes up must come down. Pray that we won’t get broken hearts by the end of the season.

So what are we going to do about this? Vote who dies! Make an impact for the producer to see! Well not really, it’s just for the community, nevertheless, it’s still fun. Here’s our Twitter poll on who people think the great ‘flag o’ death’ takes.

  1. I’m amazed Zorome and others didn’t catch on last week that they aren’t going to grow up to be adults. The other unit all but told them outright by their response to his statement about them being adults. But he raises the same point again this week and you just know he’s going to die before the end of this series.

    • Yeah, though I still don’t get it to why they can’t be adults. Maybe they were manufactured? And maybe that’s why Kokoro had a pregnancy book.

So if we follow the Gurren Lagann format, at some point they’ll discover that adults are somewhere in the sky and they’re just using them to gather magma energy.
