What is Hinamatsuri?

Hinamatsuri is a comedy, gangster-themed anime, and if you’ve watched Beelzebub you’ll be in for a treat.

One night, a strange object falls on the head of Nitta, a member of the yakuza. Inside the box is a strange young girl named Hina. She has tremendous supernatural powers, and Nitta finds himself reluctantly taking her in. Her powers can come in handy for his yakuza business, but he also runs the risk of her using them on him! Not to mention, if she doesn’t use her powers, she will eventually go berserk and destroy everything around her. Nitta and Hina’s strange life together is just beginning…

If you find the “father-figure x gangster” theme very funny, then it’s safe to say to you that this anime’s definitely worth your time.

Is the comedy good?

Hinamatsuri showcases Japan’s definition of classic comedy gold. Featuring all the Japanese tropes about comedy like stage plays, slapstick humor, and “what an idiot” jokes. It also combines comedy with great character development, avoiding all the usual case of blandness and flat characters that linger in the modern comedy genre.

It’s not really my style to tell in an initial review what kind of characters you’ll be getting so you would just have to find out who the characters are in Hinamatsuri.

Is it all about laughs?

Amazingly, this anime provides one of the best ‘Slice of Life’ type of character development for its genre. Not only featuring humourous comedic skits, Hinamatsuri’s drama can really pierce your heart, so be ready and grab a tissue. Don’t worry though, the show cares about you and will really make an effort to make you happy again after a while.

You’ll also expect to learn a thing or two on how a father learns how to take care of his little girl.

Here’s what the community thinks about Hinamatsuri

“This is probably a total mess but seriously, it is a funny show and the whole world should watch it.” – Lina (Tiny Ugly Animal)

“Once again I find myself with one of my favorite types of anime storylines.” – stardf29 (Beneath the Tangles)

“It’s a rare and unique treat amongst a sea of wearying repetitiveness and tired tropes.” – Cactus Matt (Anime Q and A)

Loli’s shooting and teleporting down from the sky? Combine that with great art, characters with substance, remarkable comedy, and a whole lot of meme-worthy skits – I’m definitely sold.
